Montgomery Public Schools Reopening FAQ 2020-2021

As MPS works to reopen our school doors for the 2020-2021 school year, we wanted to provide
our community with a few frequently asked questions and answers. We’ll continue to provide
our families with information through each school’s website. This document is intended to be
used as a guide to understanding the learning options for MPS students.

1. Will MPS provide technological devices for online learning? Every MPS student will be
issued an MPS laptop.

2. I do not have internet access. How will my student connect to the internet? MPS will
work with families to provide internet access. Parents will receive internet access
information from their child’s school a week before school begins.

3. Will breakfast and lunch still be provided to students? Yes, all MPS students will
receive breakfast and lunch.

4. What platform is MPS using for virtual learning? Per the Alabama State Department
of Education, each school system will utilize Schoology as its learning management

5. Will students be able to participate in sports or any other extracurricular activities?
Yes, all MPS students will be able to participate in sports or extracurricular

6. Will virtual lessons be taught by teachers at the school where my child is enrolled?
All MPS students will be taught by MPS teachers.

7. Do virtual students have to log in during school hours or can they wait until later
after parents have returned from work? Will they be expected to be online
throughout the school day?
All students will be required to login between 8 a.m. and
8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

8. What help is available for those students with IEPs and 504s? MPS families with IEPs
and 504s will receive services based on the student’s individual plan.

9. Will pre-K also be virtual? Yes, all MPS students will start off the year learning virtually.

10. Will teachers and students be able to keep in touch with guidance counselors? Yes,
all MPS guidance counselors will have set office hours to accommodate students.

11. Will students be required to wear MPS uniforms? Although uniforms are not required
for virtual students, all students must adhere to a proper dress code. Please see the
2020-2021 Student Conduct Manual.

12. Will teachers/MPS staff have a set time to respond to emails? All MPS employees
have a 48-hour window to respond to emails.

13. For students who plan to return to school after the first nine weeks, how will that
transition work
? A form will be sent home with students before the end of the first nine
weeks for families to fill out if they choose face-to-face learning for the second nine

14. How will attendance work for dual enrollment students? Schools will work with these
students on the best way to handle their situations.

15. Will before and after child care be available? No. Schools will not be open to students.

16. How will students be graded?  MPS will use Grading Promotion and Retention (GPR)
as outlined in the manual.
